Filmmakers, skit makers, and content creators should be aware of actor Chidi Mokeme's experience with the Police
Veteran Nollywood actor Chidi Mokeme recently spoke out about a disturbing real-life encounter with the police that was related to his acting career.
Mokeme told media personality Chude Jideonwo that entertainers frequently have awkward encounters with law enforcement because they work odd hours for productions. Police frequently stop them in the middle of the night and question where they are going.
Mokeme described an incident in which he and other crew members were transporting prop guns in their vehicle after a late shoot. Police stopped them, noticed the fake guns, and refused to believe they were film props.
Despite the group's attempts to clarify that they were actors on their way home from set, the officers arrested them on suspicion of criminal activity. Mokeme claimed they "ended up in jail" as a result of the misunderstanding about the prop firearms.
The terrifying incident exemplifies the perilous situation that entertainers face on a regular basis in Nigeria. When confronted with unusual nighttime driving or unfamiliar equipment, police often assume the worst.

Mokeme hopes his story sheds light on the harsh realities and frequent humiliations that Nigerian actors and film crews face simply trying to advance their careers. Even seasoned celebrities cannot avoid unfair harassment and accusations of wrongdoing.
The actor's candid account serves as a sobering reminder that entertainers must constantly navigate not only the demands of their craft, but also the distrust and mistreatment of law enforcement officials.
