A Catholic priest in western Kenya is recovering after being viciously attacked for allegedly having an affair with a married woman.
The incident took place on Saturday evening in Majengo village, Vihiga County. According to local reports, angry residents confronted the pastor at a local lodging while he was having an intimate encounter with the wife of another man.
In response, the mob cut off the pastor's hands and legs before fleeing the scene. Police from the nearby Serem station arrived and discovered the clergyman severely injured and dismembered. He was rushed to Mbale Referral Hospital for emergency treatment.
Despite acknowledging the pastor's alleged infidelity, authorities expressed concern about the villagers' vigilante actions. They stated that, while immoral, his crime did not warrant such heinous extrajudicial punishment.
The police have promised to thoroughly investigate the assault and prosecute those who broke the law. Community leaders are urging people to remain calm and restrained until officials establish the facts.
This incident demonstrates the strong religious and cultural attitudes toward adultery in parts of rural Kenya. However, authorities are unequivocal that no citizen, regardless of the alleged crime, should face cruel and unlawful retribution.
The injured pastor's condition is currently unknown. While conducting a thorough investigation into the attack, police will work to defuse tensions and prevent retaliation.
