Armed assailants reportedly kidnapped an unknown number of passengers on a GUO Transport company bus, k!illing the driver in a gruesome attack.
Disturbing videos circulating online show the aftermath of the attack on the Hiace 14-seater bus, which was traveling from Lagos to Abuja. The footage shows the driver lifeless in front of the now-empty vehicle, leaving only a young girl behind.
According to sources within GUO Transport, the incident occurred on the remote Ondo-Kogi expressway, where the Anambra-born driver was brutally killed.
Other drivers traveling the same route on Saturday reported that the ambushed bus had been moved to a police station in Ondo state. GUO employees made attempts to transport the deceased driver's remains to his hometown of Ihiala for burial.
This driver was also reportedly attacked last year along this dangerous route, but he narrowly escaped after gunmen fired on his windshield.
GUO Transport declined media inquiries for official information on the abduction. Police in both Ondo and Kogi states provided limited information, with Kogi claiming the attack did not occur within their jurisdiction.
The brazen attack comes just one week after a similar kidnapping of ABC Motors and God is Good bus passengers along the Abia route. In that case, 14 passengers were apprehended, and one driver was released. There were ransom demands issued.
Violent abductions of buses and passengers have become a constant threat along Nigeria's remote highways. The bandits kidnapped an unknown number of GUO customers and killed a driver in their latest attack.
