How Tinubu's Party Faithful Died With Others Hustling For 'Cheap' Customs Rice

...

Lagos, Nigeria – A member of Nigeria's ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), led by Bola Tinubu, reportedly died in a stampede at a Nigerian Customs Service (NCS) rice sale in Lagos.

The deceased, Comfort Adebanjo, was one of many people rushing to buy discounted 25kg bags of rice for 10,000 naira ($22). The NCS event was meant to alleviate economic hardships, but it devolved into chaos. A bag of rice in the open markets costs about N70,000.

Since the emergence of the current administration, which many still dispute as the people's choice, many Nigerians have faced hyperinflation, forcing them to resort to scavenging for any means of survival. Reports of people collapsing and crying in markets due to a lack of funds to buy these foods at exorbitant prices fill the media space.

Deadly stampede

The NCS rice sale sparked a stampede as large crowds jostled for discounted bags. The frenzy claimed the lives of at least seven people, including Adebanjo. The APC issued an obituary confirming her death.

Public Outcry

The tragic incident has sparked public outrage over the handling of the rice distribution. Many argue that authorities should have anticipated potential risks and implemented crowd control measures. There have been calls for an investigation and new protocols to prevent similar deaths.

APC Mourns

The APC expressed condolences on Adebanjo's death, saying, "May God grant all the members of her family and all the residents of WARD E1 the strength to bear the irreplaceable loss."

Moving forward, Nigeria must consider safer methods of distributing food aid. Though well-intended, the chaotic customs rice sale resulted in avoidable fatalities. Better planning and crowd control can help protect citizens during future relief efforts.
