The death of Prof. Felix Akpan of the University of Calabar's Political Science department has been verified by the Cross River State Police Command (UNICAL).
Prof. Akpan, a former dean of Students Affairs, was discovered dead with numerous stab wounds at his 181 Duke Town close apartment, which is located behind the Mega Hilton Hotel in Calabar.
Superintendent of Police (SP), Irene Ugbo, spokeswoman for the state Police Command, said a suspect, who claimed to be a friend of the victim, had been apprehended and an investigation was underway.
According to the SP, “We have a suspect in custody, who claims to be a friend to the victim (professor Akpan), he said he doesn’t know what happened to him or who stabbed him to death.
“Our crack team of detectives have already swung into action, we will soon get to the root of the matter by unravelling who the killer is.”
The late Professor had also averted assassination multiple times before suffering a stroke, according to the Guardian. A security guard was shot dead during one of his assassinations attempts in a drinking establishment in Marian, Calabar.
The University, on the other hand, stated that there was no official information from the family yet, but information reaching them indicated that he was stabbed to death at his residence.
Mr Eyo Eyo, UNICAL's Public Relations Officer, stated that the deceased had been absent from academic activities for roughly four years owing to illness.
The UNICAL's Public Relations Officer, Eyo said: “We are on break and again, we have been busy with the elections. Officially, I don’t know if anybody from his family has informed the University but unofficially, we have heard about his demise.
“He had been sick. It is true that during Epoke’s administration, there was an attempt on his life, he escaped it and not too long ago, he had that stroke.
So, I wouldn’t know why somebody would go to k!ll somebody in his house in that condition.”
