Bola Tinubu claims that social media has become a major issue in society and must be regulated. Tinubu, speaking through his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila, at a recent event in Lagos, emphasized the importance of accurate information in policymaking and development.
He criticized social media's harmful role in spreading false and inaccurate information, which he claims has nearly torn the country apart. Tinubu stressed the critical need to regulate the framework for news dissemination on social media in order to combat misinformation.
Tinubu stated that no developing country can thrive without adequate and well-informed data, which is required for policy formulation and growth. He stated that his administration is obligated to engage in evidence-based discussions and data-driven decision making. This necessitates accurate data, which will be used to develop better policies and procedures.
"The social media has become a societal menace and must be regulated," Tinubu asserted. "Many people do not understand that once the send button is hit, there is potential to reach millions around the world, which can not only endanger society but also cause unintended consequences to individuals receiving information, including risks to life and security."
As citizens become more involved in governance, Tinubu stated that it is the government's responsibility to ensure agreement on truth and facts. He advocated for regulations to combat the societal risks posed by social media and the spread of misinformation.
