At least three people were killed when violent demonstrations erupted in portions of Benin City, the Edo State capital, on Wednesday morning, when disgruntled locals who couldn't access their funds in commercial banks marched to the streets.

Protesters allegedly attempted to break into the State branch of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), which is located on Akpakpava Street, a commercial nerve center in Benin City, where most commercial banks are also located. They then assaulted some local commercial banks.

Also affected was Ondo State.

Residents of Akure, Ondo town, and Owo, Ondo State, took to the streets on Wednesday morning to protest the hardship caused by the Central Bank of Nigeria's reluctance to extend the deadline for phasing out old naira notes.

Youths in Akure stopped bank areas in Alagbaka, impeding vehicular passage.

Residents in Ondo town also barricaded the famed Akure motor park due to a lack of naira.

While the demonstration rattled the historic town of Owo, several market women walked to the streets holding leaves, begging for the old naira notes to be circulated alongside the new ones.

Protesters marched across major streets before marching to Olowo's palace.

In Ilorin, the capital of Kwara State, highways have been barricaded to protest the paucity of new Naira notes and the rejection of old higher banknotes by shopkeepers in the city's Oloje and Oko-Olowo neighbourhoods.

The scenario in Delta State was not as quiet, with youths allegedly setting fire to an Automated Teller Machine (ATM) in Warri to protest the lack of fresh Naira notes.
