The United States condemns the use of violence to intimidate and suppress voters in Nigeria's gubernatorial elections.

...

On March 18th, Nigeria held gubernatorial and state assembly elections, which were characterized by unsettling acts of violent voter intimidation and suppression. Such occurrences occurred in Lagos, Kano, and other states, raising concerns among international observers, notably the United States diplomatic mission, which monitored the elections in Lagos and other states.

The US is deeply concerned about using racially tinged language during and after the elections, particularly in Lagos. The government, however, commends all Nigerian political players, religious and community leaders, youth, and people who rejected and spoke out against violence and provocative language, reaffirming Nigerians' commitment to and respect for the democratic process.

The US urges Nigerian authorities to hold responsible and prosecute anybody involved in intimidating voters and suppressing voting throughout the election process. Anyone proven to be responsible for or complicit in subverting Nigeria's democratic process would face all possible sanctions, including extra visa restrictions.

During the February 25th national elections, the US and other international observers recommended the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) reform voting processes and technological parts that had faults. While the March 18th elections looked to have seen considerable operational improvements, the country reiterates its appeal for any challenges to election results to follow established legal channels that should not be obstructed.

The United States thinks Nigerians should work together to strengthen the country's dynamic democracy. All Nigerian political players, religious and community leaders, youth, and citizens must reject and condemn any forms of violence and aggressive rhetoric that damage the democratic process. Nigeria may continue to reinforce its democracy in this manner, ensuring that the country stays on the road to peace, prosperity, and growth.
