According to Governor Seyi Makinde, an explosion in Ibadan's Bodija area on Tuesday night was caused by illegal mining activities.

Addressing reporters, Makinde confirmed two deaths and 77 injuries as a result of the blast, which occurred around 7:44pm at a building on Dejo Oyeleye Street.

Preliminary security investigations revealed that illegal miners had stored explosive devices inside the property, which detonated and caused the explosion.

Rescue operations, according to Makinde, are still in progress, with emergency responders, equipment, and security personnel deployed to assist. The injured have been transported to public and private hospitals for treatment.

Makinde promised that the state government would pay for all of the victims' medical expenses. Temporary housing will also be provided for those who have been displaced while authorities work to rebuild their lives.

Makinde expressed his condolences to the families of the deceased while visiting the University College Hospital (UCH) to check on the victims. He urged residents to stay clear of the area so that rescue efforts could proceed without interruption.

The governor assured that investigations are ongoing and that anyone found to be responsible for the tragic incident would face justice.

The revelation that illegal mining activities were to blame for the fatal explosion raises safety concerns. Authorities have warned against unauthorized mining in unauthorized areas due to the associated risks.

Residents affected by the incident can call the state's emergency response number at 615. Makinde thanked first responders and medical teams for providing critical care to the victims. He asked for prayers for those impacted by the "disaster."
