Kochi, India - On Sunday, October 29, 2023, a Jehovah's Witness gathering in the Indian state of Kerala was rocked by multiple explosions that resulted in at least two fatalities and over fifty-five injuries.
In a screaming breaking news obtained from Jehovah's Witnesses was the message: "
"On Sunday, October 29, 2023, at least two bombs exploded at the regional convention held in Kerala, India. The incident occurred just after the opening prayer.
"According to initial reports, two of our sisters were killed. At least 55 individuals were injured. There were over 2,200 people in attendance. The police are currently investigating the situation. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this tragedy.—Psalm 9:9."
The explosions happened at the gathering in Kalamassery, some ten kilometres from Kochi, only seconds after the conclusion of a prayer. The convention hall was hit by two simultaneous explosions on either side of it after the initial explosive went off in the centre of the space.
At the religious occasion, more than 2,200 Jehovah's Witnesses were present. Numerous sisters suffered injuries, and at least two sisters died.
The incident is being aggressively investigated by local police and a four-person team from the National Investigation Agency (NIA). Initial research suggests that improvised explosive devices (IEDs) were the cause of the explosions.
Before turning himself in to the police, a suspect by the name of Dominic Martin uploaded a video to Facebook in which he claimed responsibility for the attack. This led to his detention. It's still unknown why the bombs were carried out.
Based on biblical teachings, Jehovah's Witnesses retain their political neutrality as a religious organization. They don't take part in politics, lobby, or cast ballots. Explaining their position in this regard, their official website, jw.org states the following: "Jehovah’s Witnesses remain politically neutral for religious reasons, based on what the Bible teaches. We do not lobby, vote for political parties or candidates, run for government office, or participate in any action to change governments. We believe that the Bible gives solid reasons for following this course.
