There is some evidence that regular ejaculation may lower the risk of prostate cancer, as opposed to prostate enlargement or benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). However, the exact relationship between s£x and prostate health is not fully understood and may be influenced by other factors such as age, lifestyle, and genetic makeup.
According to a 2016 Harvard study, ejaculating more than 20 times per month reduced prostate cancer risk by about 20% compared to ejaculating only four to seven times per month, for men in their 20s and 40s alike. Another 2016 study found similar results for men who reported ejaculating at least 21 times per month while in their twenties.
However, because these studies are based on self-reported data, they do not establish a causal relationship between ejaculation and prostate cancer prevention. They also do not address the potential effects of ejaculation on BPH, a common condition that affects roughly half of men aged 51 to 60, with the prevalence increasing with age. BPH causes urination issues such as a weak or interrupted stream, dribbling, and a frequent or urgent need to urinate.
Consulting with your doctor and following their recommendations is the recommended way to prevent or manage BPH. Regular exercise, a heart-healthy diet, limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption, and avoiding or reducing the use of decongestants and antihistamines are all examples of lifestyle changes that may be beneficial. While medication and surgery are options for treating BPH, they may cause s£xual side effects like erectile dysfunction, low libido, or decreased ejaculation volume.
As a result, while men's s£xual activity may have an impact on prostate cancer risk, it is not a reliable or sufficient method of preventing or treating BPH. You should always speak with your doctor about your prostate health and any concerns you may have.
