The administration of Chrisland schools has described the situation that resulted in the death of one of its pupils, Whitney Adeniran, who died on Thursday while participating in inter-house sports activities at Agege Stadium in Lagos State.
It was previously reported that Whitney's father, Michael Adeniran, took to social media on Saturday night to seek an investigation into his daughter's murder, urging the Lagos State government and the police to act.
He also requested that Chrisland explain what happened to his daughter, noting that she was in good health at the time the school bus picked her up for the event.
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, verified the event adding, "the case was reported to the police soon after the incident happened.
"The matter is now at the State Criminal Investigation Department and an autopsy is going to be carried out to determine the circumstances that led to her death. That's all the information I have for the time being."
Chrisland issued a press statement on Sunday in response to the plea for justice for the deceased, and a copy was made available to our correspondent.
"The administration and employees of Chrisland Schools Limited, with a great feeling of grief, announce the death of our beautiful pupil, Whitney Adeniran; whose sad exit happened on Thursday, February 9th, 2023," according to the statement.
"We are devastated and disturbed. Whitney was one of our Day students who chose not to participate in the previous inter-house sports match for unknown reasons.
"However, on discretion, we recognized her decision to err on the side of caution, because, on January 20, 2023, it is in our records that she had complained of not-too-buoyant health and we promptly notified her parents.
"Her father, Mr Michael Adeniran, arrived at the school to pick her up. We urged her parents to take a close look at her."
According to the school, the deceased collapsed in "public view and under no disguised conditions," and she was brought to the nearest medical institution for first assistance.
"Our first response was to take advantage of her proximity to first-aid by selecting the nearest medical institution to transfer her there, where the doctor on duty gave oxygen and every aid available on her," according to the statement.
Chrisland urged the Adeniran family to do a scientific examination of the underlying cause of her death before burying her.
"We quickly alerted regulatory parties and authorities to enable for a complete study and assessment of the events.
"In spite of the pressing imperatives to fill any information gaps in public space, we stopped short of producing any media sensation out of this, because the dead in issue, was a youngster and is deserving of our unqualified respect.
"We also emphasised providing respect to the privacy of the family and were with them continuously, to mourn together. "This is a heartbreaking loss for all of us," it continued.
While grieving Whitney Adeniran, the administration and employees of the Lagos-based institution expressed their condolences and sent their thoughts and prayers to the family.
"As we continue to keep the sobriety of this time, we resist any impulse to join problems on her beloved memory, in media trends.
"As we await the results of an impartial post-mortem examination, we remain unwaveringly dedicated to assisting the family at this vital time and pray earnestly for the strength to face her devastating loss," the statement continued.
